When to Refer a Patient to a Periodontist?

  • Deep pockets with bleeding on probing, pus, increased tooth mobility & bone loss
  • Localized advanced vertical bone loss
  • Gingival recession with less than 2mm keratinized attached gingiva
  • A mucogingival lesion
  • Impacted canines to be exposed
  • High frenal attachment encroaching on the gingival margins
  • Periodontal abscess
  • Inadequate crown height or inaccessible tooth margins prior to final restoration
  • Inadequate ridge under a pontic resulting in food accumulation or compromised aesthetics
  • Pathologic gingival lesions
